What have I learned in English class…?

•June 3, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Well, the last school related post for this year!  In some ways, I guess that’s great since I can just stick to talking about music from now on.  In other ways, that’s quite sad since now I’m moving on to another English class and this school year is now over.  Anyways, the main topic of this post is: what have I learned in English class this year? Well basically, this is a reflection.  Thinking over the whole year, I’ve realized there’s so many things I’ve learned.  I might have actually learned more this year in English class than in any other English class in previous years (sorry to previous teachers who may read this, no offense!).  There’s just so much I’ve learned thus far.

First off, let’s talk about presentations and being a leader.  Being a discussion leader was one of the main goals of the second semester.  We lead the class in a discussion.  Within this discussion however, we have a presentation to present.  We got to practice leadership in the classroom, as the teacher stepped down to let us lead the class.  This was in fact, a great experience.  It helps me feel more confident while giving presentations because frankly, I now have a lot of experience.  Trying to keep on task and on schedule while presenting information and keeping a class in order is very difficult.  However, I got to master most of these skills this year.  Also, presentations are something else to talk about.  We learned how to make good presentations.  We show an image on a slide and maybe a sentence or two about what we’re going to talk about.  Then we inform our audience by talking.  Yes, we have officially dropped the presentations full of only text.  However, I found that making these types of presentations are actually better.  The sentences focus on a main idea, which people can keep in mind, and the image helps present a visable object for the audience.  The presentation also forces the audience to listen, since they cannot just copy text off the slide.  I found that specifically these skills were improved this year, and I realized how important these skills are to me.

Next, we have writing one paragraph essays (a.k.a. OPE’s) and other forms of writing, (sentence patterns, comparison essays, etc.).  My skills at writing improved drastically this year.  I learned how to compress my writing in to a one paragraph essay so that I get my point across in a nice, concise manner.  I’m a person who tends to write excessively (sometimes having my essays reach 1700 words), and I feel that learning how to compress my writing in the form of OPE’s this year is a valuable skill.  Next, sentence patterns and other forms of essays.  This year, I got to learn many different sentence patterns and writing styles.  Basically, my writing has more variety now.  I can use these sentence patterns to give my writing a bit of feel so that it just doesn’t bore the audience.  I feel that these skills will all help me next year in AP English Language, and throughout my whole life when writing essays.

Finally, we have interpreting text.  This is a very, very valuable skill.  In particular, the DIDLS (Diction, Imagery, Details, Language, and Syntex), skill is very important.  I found that the texts get harder and harder every year.  Therefore, it’ll be harder to interpret every year and therefore, evaluate a text.  The DIDLS strategy helped me to simplify my work.  I can evaluate a passage easily with the DIDLS strategy, and create a one paragraph essay from the DIDLS.  Overall, our teacher helped us to identify key passages and themes in a novel and tie them together.  I think that this is a very valuable skill when reading any text, as it helps you understand the general flow of a novel.

There are many things I have learned this year.  I feel that overall, this was a very productive school year and a great learning experience.  I’m thank ful for my peers and teachers for helping me learn so much, and I think that these skills will help me in the future.  Definitely.  Hopefully I won’t forget how to use these skills, and will use them frequently throughout my writing for the rest of my life (as I still have several more years of school left).

Bluelove C.N. Blue

•May 28, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Hey guys, back again to talk about a new album.  I’m currently really addicted to this new album and it is very VERY good.  First off, it’s by a band.  Not exactly like a normal Korean pop group, but by an actual BAND band.  Their name is C.N. Blue.  They had a very popular song in their first album, which they are known for, which was titled I’m A Loner, or 외톨이야.  Now, they released a new album called Bluelove which has six songs in total.  These are:

1. Love

2. Sweet Holiday

3. Black Flower

4. Tattoo

5. 사랑 빛 or “Love Light”

6. Let’s Go Crazy

With the title song being Love.  I’d have to say that all of these songs are great.  To me, I personally like Love, Sweet HOliday, Black Flower, and Love Light the best.  The other two songs are just o.k. to me XD.  Anyways, have a listen to all of these songs, (although I’ll only post up a few :D), and enjoy!  Find the rest on Youtube if you want ;].

Love Light and Love:

Black Flower: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_ViPh5VQ5Q

Sweet Holiday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR4YjcbyX6c

And as a bonus, the lyrics to Love 😀 :

Yeah C N to the BLUE That’s right
To the sky high getem high
Yes we ready to go

Mis Mis Oh Mistake
Everybody got it LA LA LA LA
Tik Tik Tok Tok
Digi Digi Bob Bob to the Sound
우리 둘이 break it now
Tell me Why why why
No Bye bye bye
I can try try try
You know
I want get get get your love
Love Love Love Everybody
Clap Clap Clap
I want you back to me
Love Love Love Everybody
Clap Clap Clap
I want you back to me
I wanna go back 함께했던 그 때로
Miss Miss Missing you
Everybody got it LA LA LA LA
Tik Tik Tok Tok
Digi Digi Bob Bob to the Sound
Break it now
Hold me cry cry cry
Tell me lie lie lie
You say I want get get get your love
Love Love Love Everybody
Clap Clap Clap
I want you back to me
Love Love Love Everybody
Clap Clap Clap I want you back to me
Yeah We make you high
Im ready for this
CNBLUE microphone check one two
Tell me why why why
No Bye bye bye
I can try try try
You know I want get get get your love
Hold me cry cry cry
Tell me lie lie lie
You say I want get get get your love
Love Love Love Everybody
Clap Clap Clap
I want you back to me
Love Love Love Everybody
Clap Clap Clap I want you back to me
Love Love Love

 Enjoy!

Brave New World… A prediction?

•May 24, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Hello, and I’m back again with another, (unfortunately), school related post.  Currently, my English class is reading the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.  Right off the bat, I’m going to have to say that the book is interesting.  It’s the first time I’ve actually read a novel like this.  First off, this book was supposedly a prediction of what was supposed to happen in the future, as this book wasn’t written recently, it was written a bit in the past.  The thing about this novel is that the new world is a dystopia.  However, there are many similar things between the world mentioned in the novel and our world today.  For example, technology has been improved greatly.  We have many new sources of technology to depend on, although our technology is not as advanced as the technology in the novel.  What’s also correct is the idea of cloning, which has been tested in our society, but is not used like it is in the novel.  Some things I found off track though were the dependancy on Henry Ford, the savage reservation, and the brainwashing techniques.  I think that Henry Ford is indeed an influential figure, but not to the point where he should be considered a “god”.  Also, the savage reservation confused me.  Why would the World State keep a savage reservation if everything was supposedly “under their control”.  Finally, the brainwashing techniques just seem incorrect.  I strongly think that the way Huxley predicted that everyone would be brainwashed by the government is incorrect, as I believe people would have rebelled and fought back, never allowing the government to steal the freedom of their own minds from them. So far, (as we have not yet finished the novel), I believe Brave New World is a very interesting book.  It presented many ideas that I had never even thought of, such as the brainwashing, and it talks about some events that may occur in the future.  As people always talk about “a shadow of a doubt” meaning giving someone a glimpse of doubt will have them constantly thinking about that doubt forever, this book gave me a “shadow of a doubt” regarding the world.  Now, I believe that anything is possible and there are many different ways of ruining people’s lives.

H2 “Heart Attack!”

•May 18, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Hello again everyone! I’m back again with another new album, (a single) called Heart Attack or 마음에 병 in Korean.  This is a song by H2, which includes a rapper who is returning the music scene named H-Eugene.  You can tell that these two artists worked very hard while producing this song as this song is very good.  There are extremely strong vocals, and we can tell that they poured their heart in to this song.  First off, I’ll post some links.  Then, I’ll post the lyrics under the links.  Enjoy!

And here are the lyrics!:

캄캄한 밤이라서 울었죠
누가 볼까봐
눈물을 보이기가 싫어서
오후 해가 지길 기다렸다가
해가 지고 나서야
참아왔던 눈물을 쏟아냈죠 Baby
I want you to back so back
I know I’m stuck with me
through ma whole struggle
I see everything

Enjoy!

Back to the Basic

•April 27, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Hello everyone, I’m back again with some more music.  This album isn’t exactly a very recent release, but due to my on-and-off blogging, I’ll have to talk about it a while after its release.  This is a comeback album titled “Back to the Basic” by Rain, which was one of the most waited comebacks in a while along with Lee Hyori, After School, and several other bands.  This album consists of 5 songs, with the title song labeled 널 붙잡을 노래 or Love Song in English.  The tracklist is as follows:

2. Hip Song

3. One

(Same)

5. Love Song (English Ver.)

In this album, Rain went for more of a ballad side instead of a dark concept like Rainism.  However, the song is just as good as any other of his songs.  His album comeback had to be delayed right before its release.  He also had some more bad luck as the music programs were shut down due to the naval tragedy in Korea.  Therefore, he probably didn’t get the comeback he expected.  He even had his music video banned from music channels.  However, I feel that this is for a very dumb reason.  Since he was shown running on a road, Korea feels that this is a violation of road rules and therefore banned his music video.  Of all things, I feel like Korea is just trying to ban everything, as they did the same thing with Lee Hyori’s music video.

A very interesting piece of information to know about his title song Love Song is that he apparently made the song in 30 minutes.  Apparently, Rain and a producer named Tae Wan created Love Song together in just 30 minutes.  Tae Wan quotes “One day in the middle of the night, Rain called me and we met up at the studio and created Love Song in 30 minutes.”  Read the full article on allkpop here: http://www.allkpop.com/2010/04/rain-created-love-song-with-producer-in-thirty-minutes.

For the English version of Love Song, my opinion of it is that it isn’t as good as the actual Korean version.  I commend him for singing the whole song in English, and for even translating it that well, but it just doesn’t sound the same in Korean.  The dance, like always, is quite good though.

Well, like always I included a few videos at the bottom.  The first one is his music video for 널 붙잡을 노래 or Love song, and the second one is his comeback stage.  Enjoy!

What do I like about learning?

•April 11, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Yet again, this is another school-related post.  This is an interesting topic however.  “What do you like about learning?”  Well, truthfully I like a lot of things about learning (believe it or not).  First off, it’s just the feeling of learning something new and interesting.  You just like having that feeling that you’re learning something new.  However, this only applies when it INTERESTS you.  For example, learning instruments interests me.  When I learn a new technique on the drums, guitar, or any other instrument, it INTRIGUES me.  Now, let’s say that I learn a new way to solve an algebraic equation or something.  Most likely, unless it’s a shortcut on how to easily solve a problem, I’m not going to be very excited.

Also, another thing I like about learning is actually applying what I learned to my life.  For example, I’m currently learning how to swim.  Well, not exactly learning how to swim, but how to swim faster (for competitions).  Therefore, I undergo vigerous training.  Who knows, someday when I fall off a boat or something, then the training I got for swimming may save me.  Another example of this is learning Chinese.  Then, I can speak Chinese to Chinese people or when I go to China.  This recently happened when I attended an AISA swim tournament this year in China.  I actually got to speak Chinese with a lot of people.

Basically, what I like about learning is learning something that is interesting to me, or what is useful to me.  Seeing myself applying what I have learned to my life makes me feel like I’m accomplishing a lot.  Also, learning things that interest me allow me to have fun while learning at the same time.

My Weakness…?

•April 7, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Back again with sadly, another school related post.  This post will dissapoint some since it won’t be about what you think.  This is not a weakness to defeat me in any way, (well I don’t think so), so sorry for those who were expecting me to tell everyone what I’m weak against :D.  On the contrary, this is just something that I feel that I need to improve.  My weakness is, like many others, time management.

Time management is something many people find hard.  We always tend to procrastinate, or do things at the last minute, for unknown reasons.  Instead of using freetime for catching up on homework, some people just play around or sleep, which causes them to get behind on homework.  The same goes for projects, since we tend to do them at the last minute.  Even though we get several weeks to do it, most likely students will not start on the project until the last week before the project’s due.

So, how do I fix this weakness?  Well basically, I force myself to work.  For instance, there are certain subjects that I should be studying for.  For these subjects, I just go to a hagwon (cram school), so that I spend the actual time I intended to studying and not distracted.  To get an easier idea of what I’m saying, I’ll use the example of exercise.  People need to exercise.  Therefore, I force myself to exercise by getting a trainer and joining the swim team.  Therefore, I don’t have a choice of whether or not I should exercise or stay home and be lazy.  I HAVE to go.  I feel that, of course, this isn’t the best way to deal with time management.  However, this DOES indeed work if you want to specifically force yourself to do something.  Therefore, I believe that this is one way to deal with the problem.
